PASSENGER Trailer Made Me Scream Out Loud

The Nerdist - Tue, 04/14/2026 - 08:03

The trailer for Passenger starts off like any other horror movie might. Two men are stopped by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. One vanishes into the woods. The other, of course, gets in the car and keeps driving. As he drives, he passes the same ominous figure again, and again, and again. You know what is coming. I know what is coming. And still in the middle of a full theater, I SCREAMED my lungs out when the first jump scare came. And then everyone laughed. It was pretty funny. But watching a fuller version of the Passenger trailer now at home, I STILL screamed about three times. It’s jump-scare after jump-scare, and it works. Freak yourself out below.

The road trip, the Passenger trailer posits, is a dangerous activity. And after watching this sneak peek at the upcoming horror movie, we tend to agree. You never know what passenger you might pick up in your travels. We guess you’re safe… as long as you keep going.

It’s hard to say what exactly is happening in the Passenger trailer, but it ABSOLUTELY feels freaky. Plus, there’s some religious imagery that we’re into. And some just downright beautiful cinematography to boot. Of course, there’s the most important thing. It’s is SCARY. Now, a scary trailer is no guarantee that the movie will terrify us. But it feels like a good sign.

In addition to the trailer, here’s the  synopsis for Passenger, which sheds a bit more light on the intense film’s story: “A few weeks into their van life adventure, a young couple witnesses a horrific accident that leaves the driver dead. Soon they’re being pursued by a demonic stalker who’s impossible to outrun and follows them wherever they go.”

Paramount Pictures

Yikes! I know I’ll be checking behind me everywhere I go today… Especially if I’m getting behind the wheel of a car.

Passenger releases on May 22.

GRANDGEAR Film Teases Robot Vs. Kaiju Chaos, Sets Release Date

The Nerdist - Tue, 04/14/2026 - 07:18

Grandgear is gonna bring some big robot and kaiju action to theaters in the not-so-far future. Sony Pictures is behind this project, which has Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki on the team as well as Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams producing. The production company teased more information at CinemaCon 2026 for the Grandgear movie, including a February 18, 2028 release date as well as a short but very cool concept clip from the film. Legendary/Apple TV+

It was a whole lotta mecha versus kaiju chaos in the streets, basically. And it certainly caught the attention of the crowd, even though it was a very short look. We are hype about what’s coming from Sony in the future, including a Bloodborne R-rated film.

BLOODBORNE R-Rated Film Is In the Works at Sony Pictures

The Nerdist - Tue, 04/14/2026 - 06:56

PlayStation and Sony Pictures are teaming up to make Bloodborne fans’ dreams come true with an R-rated movie. The news sent shockwaves through the crowd at CinemaCon 2026 during Sony’s special presentation on April 13. President of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Group Sanford Panitch, told attendees that the rumors about a film based on the wildly popular Bloodborne gaming franchise were true. And he promised that this film will not skimp on the gore, remaining true to the spirit of the Bloodborne world.

For those who are not quite familiar, Bloodborne follows a traveler who goes to a gothic city full of nightmarish creatures. Obviously, video game adaptations are all the rage right now with the success of shows like The Last of Us to the money making The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER Trailer Is Scarily Good

The Nerdist - Tue, 04/14/2026 - 06:37

The Insidious franchise refuses to quit taking us into the Further, and we don’t mind that at all. During CinemaCon 2026, Sony Pictures dropped the trailer for the next installment, Insidious: Out of the Further, and it scared everyone in the best way. Thankfully, it’s not a clip that you have to wait a long time to see. Check it out below:

In it, we see an older man is at the dentist as a younger women looks in his mouth. Suddenly, a second set of teeth clamp onto her and she ends up in a nightmarish situation where she’s trapped and about to be drilled to death.

It turns out the woman is having nightmares that are scaring her and her daughter. She goes for help and learns that she has a gift to travel from one realm to the next, but she can bring demons back to the real world permanently. She questions what happens if she cannot control it. Here’s a synopsis to go along with that clip:

In Insidious: Out of the Further, Amelia Eve stars as Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in who discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe. When something evil comes after her, Gemma discovers an ability that changes everything: she doesn’t just enter The Further, she can bring what lives there back to the real world. Once the demons realize her power, our world becomes their playground.

Insidious: Out of the Further has a truly a creepy and unsettling trailer that had the whole room shaking. One of the worst things that can happen to a person is bringing things from the Further into our realm. Good luck girl!

What Is the Release Date for Insidious: Out of the Further? Sony Pictures

Insidious: Out of the Further will hit theaters on August 21.

JUMANJI Sequel Reveals Its New Title

The Nerdist - Mon, 04/13/2026 - 20:32

CinemaCon 2026 is delivering a ton of film news in Las Vegas. This annual trade show is the place to be for major movie studios as they tease their upcoming films and drop major announcements about what’s coming in the future. This year, Sony Pictures kicked off the convention’s opening night with a lot of fresh news about their epic movie slate, including the next Jumanji film’s title along with some first footage that will surely delight fans once it hits the internet in the form of a trailer. Columbia Pictures

When the franchise got a sequel back in 2017 with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, we were cautiously optimistic. We grew up with the original 1995 film starring the great Robin Williams, and that’s such a classic. However, we knew the power of Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson was simply too powerful to ignore. And, when you throw in Karen Gillan and Jack Black, well, that’s something to behold.

JUMANJI Film Sequel Will Hit Theaters on Christmas Day

It was a hit and so was the 2019 sequel. Now, the quartet is returning on Christmas Day 2026 for Jumanji: Open World, with much of the previous cast returning. Speaking of the cast, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Dwayne Johnson came to CinemaCon to chat about the film… and also talk about how The Rock is kinda drunk. It seems that everyone except Kevin had a great time filming as well. They showed Karen some love considering she couldn’t make it. Johnson also gave props to Robin Williams and says there’s an Easter egg in the film where they are using one half of the original dice that was from the OG film.

Here’s what we saw in the room for this next Jumanji sequel. A woman opens the door for a repair guy, and it is that darn video game console. The horror of Spencer and friends is immediate, especially when they see that Dr. Bravestone is in the world but he’s not quite himself. In fact, none of the avatars are themselves and are stuck in demo mode. Oh boy. It’s one last time to finish another mission in Jumanji.

SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE Drops Bold CinemaCon Preview

The Nerdist - Mon, 04/13/2026 - 20:15

Somehow, it has been nearly three long years since Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse left us with the cliffhanger of a lifetime. We are beyond ready to see Gwen and her crew of Spider folks go on a mission to rescue Miles from the wrong universe. Since then, we have been waiting for the sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse, to arrive at theaters. After a few delays, the film is set to arrive on June 18, 2027. That still feels like a long way off, but CinemaCon 2026 just made Beyond the Spider-Verse seem a tiny bit closer. Sony Animation

Attendees got to see Chris Miller and Phil Lord take the stage along with Bob Persichetti and Justin K Thompson as the directors gave us a look at Beyond the Spider-Verse. They promised it would be a very emotional ending to this trilogy. The footage picks up right where the previous film left off, with Miles having to face himself and find his way out of being in the very wrong place.

We get to see more of this universe’s Miles, who is of course the Prowler. He’s not keen on letting our Miles go and then things get rather funny when the two Miles argue about how to pronounce their last names and what the heck a “Spider-Man” is. We see Miles get a little tricky and get a tease that he will make some new connections to become even stronger as a hero. We cannot wait to see how this epic trilogy ends and how it will set up the spinoff projects for Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk.

Zach Cregger’s RESIDENT EVIL Teases Grotesque Monsters and Gore

The Nerdist - Mon, 04/13/2026 - 19:53

Once again, horror is set to have another stunning year thanks to films like Lee Cronin’s The Mummy and Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil. Speaking of the latter, this reboot will tell an original story set in the famed game universe, with some inspiration from the second through fourth games specifically. We also know that the film will hit theaters on September 18, 2026. But now, thanks to CinemaCon 2026, we have more information about Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot film, specifically a sneak peek.

Zach Cregger’s RESIDENT EVIL Reboot Movie Promises Original Story Will Respect Games

It will star Austin Abrams along with Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, Zach Cherry, and Johnno Wilson. It was incredibly exciting for Nerdist to get a first look at this 2026 Resident Evil movie, and here’s what we saw. A man comes to a house and asks if he can use the phone but it is to no avail. He leaves a message for someone, saying he’s sorry that they got disconnected earlier but some really f**ked up things happened and now they may not talk again. And that’s an understatement considering the grotesque monsters and gore that we see. It certainly evokes the spirit of Resident Evil games.

Capcom

We anticipate that footage will hit the web pretty soon, and when it does we will have it right here for you.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Swings Into CinemaCon With New Footage

The Nerdist - Mon, 04/13/2026 - 19:41

CinemaCon 2026 is here and things are heating up with the convention’s first major studio presentation for the week. For those who don’t know, CinemaCon is an annual trade show event that takes place in Las Vegas and brings together studio partners and exhibitors to focus on innovations in the film industry and new trends. But it has also become a place for film studios to give exclusive information and a look at their upcoming slates. Nerdist is on the ground for this event, and we were there to witness Sony Pictures special presentation, which included big news about Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Sony Pictures

We recently got a trailer to show Tom Holland’s triumphant return as Peter Parker. But, CinemaCon 2026 gave us more intel into Spider-Man: Brand New Day. SPE CEO Tom Rothman said it is unlike anything they’ve ever done before. He showed two rad new posters for the film, one of which includes MJ in the eye of Spidey’s mask. We are sure that those images will hit the internet at some point. Rothman also said that this is Tom Holland’s greatest performance.

Holland made an appearance…well, sort of. A video of him appeared onstage and he said this is the most “emotional” movie ever made. He showed us a clip of the consequences of Peter having to make the tough choice for everyone to forget him. He’s in a bodega eating when his old pal Ned comes in. Ned grabs a few things and leaves, and Peter decides to follow him. Ned is with friends at a party full of booze (some of which he just bought). Someone offers Peter a cup and he takes it with little interest before wandering off to look at Ned’s things.

A wall in front of him has various news but Ned pops out before Peter can read more about the many Spidey posts. Ned has even been tracking Spider-Man to figure out who he is. Ned says he wishes he could thank Spider-Man personally, which is so incredibly sad. It gets even sadder when MJ shows up and introduces herself to Peter. As MJ and Ned talk about their lives, including a recent interview, Peter listens from afar and is heartbroken to see MJ in a relationship.

We even see another clip of Spidey getting his stretch on before taking out some guards.

An ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Reboot Is Happening

The Nerdist - Mon, 04/13/2026 - 16:11

Well, what do we have here? During StudioCanal’s panel at CinemaCon 2026, the studio announced that it is taking quite the big swing at a John Carpenter classic. There’s an Escape from New York reboot on the way, which StudioCanal is doing in partnership with The Picture Company. We are cautiously optimistic, and for good reason. At one point, Robert Rodriguez, Radio Silence, and even Joel Silver were trying to take a swing at a new version of the 1981 film starring Kurt Russell. AVCO Embassy Pictures

We don’t know who is attached to this gestating version of Escape from New York at this time. Perhaps Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who seems to be in everything, will take on the role of the Plissken, complete with an eye patch and a bad attitude. Filmgoers love a dystopian hellscape, apparently. Let’s see where this one goes and who will be apart of the journey.
