Tom Cruise Brings DIGGER Footage to CinemaCon

The Nerdist - Tue, 04/14/2026 - 17:41

In a very surprising turn of events, one of the biggest action stars on the planet made an appearance at CinemaCon 2026. Cruise and director Alejandro Iñárritu chatted with Warner Bros. “The Big Picture” presentation host Patton Oswald about their upcoming film Digger, which release an intriguing trailer a while back. They started talking about Digger and Cruise’s titular role seven years ago, and now they are almost at the film’s debut on October 2.

Iñárritu said working with Cruise was incredibly exciting, a sentiment that Cruise also had for him. Cruise said it took 40 years for him to put on the boots of Digger Rockwell and calls the movie wild and funny. And, to delight the audience, footage from Digger graced the screen. We see Tom Cruise in an unrecognizable form, trying to feed his cat who is apparently dying (or so we think). He does a monologue about his former home runs and lives in a wild castle.

Warner Bros./Legendary

He gets a message from an environmental guy and keeps interrupting him as the tells him that he won’t shut down a platform that he’s deeply invested in that has dangerous leaks. John Goodman portrays the president and reveals that this place could displace millions of people. He says that Digger will have to get them out of the mess. Everything about this comedy is quite chaotic and bizarre in the best way. Everyone is old and insane, and we love that.

PVUSD announces Sustainable Schools Advisory group

The Pajaronian - Tue, 04/14/2026 - 17:10

Pajaro Valley Unified School District on Tuesday announced the formation of the Sustainable Schools Advisory, a group of 23 parents, staff and community members described in a press release as “a community-informed effort focused on the long-term strength of our schools.”

District officials have not officially stated that the group will consider closing schools, but that has been a central topic of conversation at board meetings for more than a year, as projected declining enrollment over the next decade threatens to take a multimillion-dollar bite out of the district’s finances.

Officials have, however, noted that many schools are far below capacity, with several classrooms sitting empty.

Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge John Salazar will serve as the advisory’s independent facilitator.

The Board of Trustees will announce the formation of the group during its meeting Wednesday. It is not an action item, however, and no action will be taken.

The Sustainable Schools Advisory was set to hold its first meeting Tuesday, during which members were expected to discuss the group’s charter and lay out meeting rules. It is scheduled to meet every two weeks thereafter. The group will bring its findings to the board later this year.

In other PVUSD news, the district has proposed a cap on teacher benefits during ongoing negotiations, an item not on the meeting agenda but likely to draw a sizable crowd to speak against the proposal.

Both the district and the Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers posted announcements on their Facebook accounts Tuesday.

The district is proposing a 7.77% salary increase over three years, coupled with a $36,000 annual contribution toward family health benefits.

District spokesman Alejandro Chavez said the proposal is the “start of negotiations” and that there was no further information.

Cesar Chavez Middle School teacher Emily Halbig, who serves as the PVFT Vice President of Communications, said the salary increase — about $177 per month in the first year — would not cover the additional costs teachers would pay for their health plans.

Under the proposal, Halbig said teachers would either need to switch to a lower-cost HMO plan or pay the difference to keep their current PPO coverage.

Using district-provided projections, she said a family PPO plan is expected to cost about $47,900 next year. With the district contribution capped at $36,000, that would leave employees paying roughly $12,000 out of pocket — about $1,000 per month.

As part of the proposal, Halbig said the district is offering cost-of-living adjustments of about 2% in each of the first two years and 3% in the third year, totaling roughly 7%.

“That’s in no way close to breaking even for those teachers who have family plans,” she said.

Halbig said the union is preparing to oppose the proposal and expects strong resistance from its members.

“We know our membership is going to be opposed,” she said, noting that even the idea of a benefits cap has drawn pushback at school board meetings.

She added that, while the proposal is concerning, having it formally presented provides some clarity.

“Now we can plan moving forward,” she said.

Halbig questioned the district’s financial outlook, pointing to past projections that resulted in surpluses.

“We’re not convinced that the district is in as bad of a shape as it seems,” she said, adding that the union is seeking updated financial data, particularly after recent staffing changes and incentives.

She also argued that other cost-cutting measures should reduce the need for changes to benefits.

“If they’re making all these other cuts, then they shouldn’t also need to come after benefits,” she said.

Halbig noted that several school districts across California have faced labor actions over similar issues, particularly where benefit caps were previously adopted.

“In many cases, those caps have turned into annual pay cuts, with employees paying more each year,” she said.

Based on that, she said the union is unwilling to accept a similar structure.

“We’re not going to give away what other districts are fighting to win back,” she said.

Halbig said the proposal is likely to be rejected by members and could lead to an impasse in negotiations, potentially triggering state mediation.

“This is the one thing people have told me they would strike over,” she said.

She emphasized that any agreement would have to be negotiated, not imposed.

“They can’t force it on us,” she said. “But if people don’t want it to happen, they’re going to have to show up and fight for it.”

Oz Perkins, Nicolas Cage Return for New LONGLEGS Movie

The Nerdist - Tue, 04/14/2026 - 15:22

Back in 2024, Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs became the surprise indie horror hit of the year. Featuring a truly unhinged performance from Nicolas Cage, Longlegs had Satan-worshipping serial killers, creepy dolls, demonic forces, psychic FBI agents, the works. Now, Perkins and Cage are expanding the Longlegs universe in a new movie. But don’t get confused: this new movie is not an actual Longlegs sequel; instead, it is a movie that is set in the universe of Longlegs. Here’s what we know.NEON

This new film isn’t coming from Neon, the indie studio behind the original, but instead, Paramount has acquired the rights. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plans for this new film were bigger than what is standard for a Neon budget, and they pulled out of participating. Perkins will once again write, direct, and produce this new Longlegs movie.

Longlegs was a massive success two years ago, earning $128 million worldwide on a budget of less than $10 million. It very quickly became Neon’s highest-grossing domestic release, propelled by significant word of mouth from the horror fandom. And it’s really the film that put Osgood Perkins on the map as the horror director of the moment. But what could a follow-up Longlegs film entail, especially as it’s not a proper sequel? Could Nicolas Cage be returning as another character, instead of Satanic serial killer Dale Ferdinand Kobble? It’s possible that they go the route of The Black Phone franchise, and turn him into a ghost/dream sort of killer.

LONGLEGS Is a Very Weird, Very Upsetting, Thoroughly Captivating Horror Show

Since Oz Perkins’ Longlegs, he’s directed a string of successful horror movies, including The Monkey and Keeper. He also just wrapped production of The Young People, starring Nicole Kidman. That’s a lot for two years. Will Longlegs become his first franchise? Paramount already has several money-making horror franchises, including Scream and Smile. But since horror often makes several times its budget when successful, you can see how Paramount’s new owners, Skydance, would want another surefire horror series. We’ll have to see what form this takes when cameras start rolling on this new Longlegs continuation.

World Warrior Tournament Countdown Hints at a STREET FIGHTER Trailer

The Nerdist - Tue, 04/14/2026 - 15:00

The World Warrior Tournament, aka Street Fighter, is returning. Recently, flyers have been popping up all around the world… and they seem to tease that the upcoming Street Fighter movie is doing something exciting. Each flyer betrays a QR code that leads to a live countdown. And that countdown culminates on April 16. What Street Fighter excitment lays in store for us? We get the sense there might be a Street Fighter trailer that arrives when that buzzer sounds. I hope you’re ready, because the time has come. ROUND ONE…FIGHT!

Legendary Pictures and Capcom’s live-action Street Fighter movie is one we’re excited for. With a stacked cast and iconic story, we’re gearing up for greatness. Less than a year away from the film’s release, we’ll hopefully get a major sneak peek at the Street Fighter movie in the form of a trailer. For now, the World Warrior Tournament is back, baby. As we mentioned, all kinds of flyers have been popping up around the world to celebrate. Even current game director Takayuki Nakayama joins in on the fun.

In addition to leading you to that exciting live countdown, each Street Fighter flyer features delightful Easter eggs that reference the film’s 1993 setting. The design features a Shadaloo logo in the globe, the iconic Guile line “Go home and be a family,” and the cast laid out to mirror the game’s player select screen. The countdown site plays “Guile’s Theme,” another reference to the game. WWE superstar Cody Rhodes will play Guile in the movie.

Some flyers have also been thoughtfully placed in ways that reference specific stages in the Street Fighter game. For example, one flyer in Japan found its home in a Japanese bath house, signifying E. Honda’s stage in Street Fighter II. Another flyer in the U.S. can be seen at a marina, referencing Battle Harbor.

Paramount Pictures/Capcom

There are many more where those came from. People have spotted other Street Fighter flyers in Italy, Brazil, Australia, Germany, France, and New York City. The final countdown to the World Warrior Tournament has begun, and we’re ready to rumble. Paramount Pictures will distribute Street Fighter. ROUND ONE begins in October of 2026.

AIR BUD RETURNS Will Hit Theaters in August

The Nerdist - Tue, 04/14/2026 - 14:30

I’ve been a big sports fan all my life, so I know leagues are not always quick to adapt. I also know they’re not always well-run. But at this point you’d think they would know you have to make a rule that says dogs can’t play. You just have to. Otherwise you end up with a golden retriever in tiny sneakers dropping dimes. And yet, after almost thirty years and 14 movies, they still haven’t. They. Still. Haven’t.

And that’s how we’re about to get a 15th installment, Air Bud Returns. There was even a major search for the next Air Bud and the competition was so stiff that there are actually two winners. Meet Charlie and Summer, two pure bred Golden Retrievers who have the personality, style, and basketball playing skills to be Buddy in the next Air Bud movie.

Variety reports Cineverse and Air Bud Entertainment are working on another film in a franchise that began in 1997. The latest movie will, somehow, be the series’ 15th installment. If you’re curious how we’ve already had 14 of these films, that’s because 1998’s Air Bud: Golden Receiver, the first sequel, was the last to premiere in theaters. The next 12 were all direct-to-video releases. That includes the Buddies and Santa Paws spinoffs. You know, those movies we all collectively remember and watched a bunch of times

Air Bud Entertainment

Air Bud Entertaiment founder Robert Vince will write and direct this new film. It’s a dual role he’s very familiar with. He’s already pulled that double duty on ten previous installments. He was also a producer on all of the series’ early films and on Santa Paws. His direct connection to the original Air Bud is especially encouraging. Even if he didn’t write it, he gets to claim partial credit for giving moviegoers one of the most iconic lines in Hollywood history, “Ain’t no rules say the dog can’t play basketball.”

A press release shared by Variety provides a synopsis for the film. It unexpectedly meta.

In Air Bud Returns, 12-year old Jacob has always dreamt of being a star basketball player. After the passing of his father, that dream felt even more impossible. But everything changes when he and his mom move into his dad’s childhood home in Fernfield. There, Jacob discovers an original VHS of the Air Bud movie in his father’s belongings and has a chance meeting of a stray golden retriever he names Buddy. Together they embark on a journey of healing, unite a team of misfits, and chase a championship. Through it all they learn to play from the heart, believe in each other, and always take the shot!

Air Bud Returns will begin production soon in the same place they filmed the original, Fort Langley, British Columbia. The film will arrive in theaters on August 21, which is actually National Golden Retrievers Day. And it’s all possible because even after 28 years, sports leagues still haven’t made a rule about dogs playing.
